The Flower: Circle

I created this artwork because, as a child, I went through difficult moments too. In many ways, I am a reflection of my mother, though I often felt like the least favored. I remember that whenever she became upset with me, I would quietly cry by the cabinet door, holding a piece of cardboard and a red Pentel pen, writing the words, “Jesus loves me.”

I love my mother deeply. There were times when I talked back to express my own opinions, but no matter what happened, I could never go to sleep without saying, “I’m sorry.” I may have shed many tears, but I have always continued to count my blessings.

This beautiful piece of math art can help us explore important ideas like radius, diameter, and circumference of a circle. It is also an artistic way to understand fraction. Let’s encourage kids to be imaginative and think outside of the box!

Each petal has a radius of 1 inch. Ask the kids to measure the diameter by finding the distance across the petal through its center. Now, imagine a full circle behind the flower—let them measure or estimate the circumference of that invisible circle.

When it comes to fraction:
Each petal = 1/4 of a whole
Each flower = 2/4 (or 1/2) of a whole
Each leaf = 1/2 of a petal
